The Information is the tenth studio album by American musician Beck, released on October 3, 2006 by Interscope Records. It was produced and mixed by Nigel Godrich, who Beck had previously recorded Mutations (1998) and Sea Change (2002) with. Recording took place from 2003 to 2006, with Beck concurrently working on 2005's Guero with The Dust Brothers. This is the first album by Beck that is over 1 hours long.
Voice – Rachel Shelley. Voice – Cosimo Hansen. Written-By – Beck Hansen, Nigel Godrich (tracks: CD-5, CD-12, CD-14, DVD-5, DVD-12, DVD-14). Recorded at Ocean Way Studios, Conway Studios, Sound Isadore & Beck's Garage (Los Angeles, CA), winter 03 to spring 06.
Beck began work on 2006's The Information after Sea Change but before he reunited with the Dust Brothers for 2005's Guero, eventually finishing the album after Guero was generally acclaimed as a return to Odelay form. So, it shouldn't come as a great surprise that The Information falls somewhere between those two records, at least on sonic terms. Musically, it's certainly a kindred spirit to Guero, meaning that it hearkens back to the collage of loose-limbed, quirky white-boy funk-rock and rap that brought Beck fame at the peak of the alt-rock revolution, with hints of the.

The Information arrived in early October 2006, heading straight for No. 7 on the Billboard 200 with a first-week sale within a whisker of 100,000, as ‘Nausea’ climbed the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album later went gold. The Los Angeles Times observed: This is their third collaboration, but neither the casual, light-bodied Mutations nor the intimate Sea Change anticipated this kind of flowering.
The album seemed a bit inconsistent yet Beck shows off more interesting ideas on here then he did on Guero. The Information shows off some unique and inventive moments but there’s obviously something missing. It seems like Beck has lost a lot of his luster; the music lacks the chilled out grooves found on earlier releases and it doesn’t feature many hard rocking moments either. Beck has gone for a more dance/funk type of style that is found on Midnite Vultures only this time Beck throws a few more random tracks out there that don’t fit the mood. The main aspect that keeps The Information above a sub-par level is how Beck does come up with some very sleazy, upbeat, and funky tunes. Cellphone’s Dead samples Herbie Hancocks Chameleon as it’s zany bassline and odd lyrical topic combine to create an original and upbeat pop tune that rivals any track off of Midnite Vultures.
During the bizarre final minutes of Beck's ninth album, director Spike Jonze and author Dave Eggers philosophize about what the "ultimate record that ever could possibly be made" would sound like. change depending on what mood you're in," imagines Jonze. Or, depending on when you listen to them at a different age, they'll mean something different. Ultimately, the same can be said for The Information, which is made from a similar scattershot, self-referencing pastiche. But there are key variations that give the new album a cohesion its predecessor lacked. This time, über-producer Nigel Godrich is the main collaborator, and his psychedelic studio wizardry one-ups the Dust Brothers' sample-based concoctions at nearly every turn. The record also benefits from a future-sick quasi-concept worthy of Philip K. Dick (or Thom Yorke).
Beck: The Information. Slippery bugger, that Beck. Beck has plans for ‘The Information’. It’s the sort of madness you only hear from the artists who really mean it. Because it was never really about irony for Beck Hansen.
