Socrates Drank The Conium - Phos (1976). Socrates Drank The Conium.

Before and after this album Socrates made a number of other albums, sometimes under the imaginative name 'Socrates drank the conium'. But they lack some of the melancholy and weirdness of their illustrious predecessors, which is where Vangelis comes in for this 1976 album "Phos". Socrates, like Aphrodite's Child, recorded for Vertigo/Polygram which is probably how they got in touch with Vangelis, who in turn might have relished the chance to work with some fellow Greeks again, in a rather uncomplicated style far removed from his own at the time (. Albedo . 9", "Spiral"). Describing the album track by track, focusing on Vangelis' input

Antonis Tourkogiorgis - vocals, electric & acoustic guitar, bass Yannis Spathas - lead guitar, acoustic guitar George Tradalidis - drums, percussion Vangelis Papathanassiou - keyboards, percussion. All CD releases so far are taken from the same vinyl source, even the "remastered" ones. The vinyl noise (including a warp) can easily be heard if you turn up the volume in between track 3 and 4.

It sounds like another case of lost master tapes... Which is why I've long been an advocate of getting all audio properly saved on a hard drive AND released on CD, so that the world doesn't need to rely on vinyl records for audio preservation and subsequent re-issues. This continued lack of foresight with the return to vinyl astounds me. In the unthinkable event that an important hard drive should go down and sound files get lost, then at least CDs have been sent out into the world as potential back-ups.

Unfortenately, even the Esoteric CD is taken from the same vinyl source as the other CDs. It has just been boosted and some of extra reverb has been added. You can easily hear the vinyl sounds in the background if you turn up the volume in the end of track 3 (the part with the clock).

martinkn, But what about the Esoteric CD version? Aren't those from proper masters? Either way, I really don't like the cover design with the band photos and wish someone would properly re-issue the Peters International cover version on CD...
