Probably Picasso's most famous work, Guernica is certainly the his most powerful political statement, painted as an immediate reaction to the Nazi's devastating casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during Spanish Civil War. Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace.
Pablo Ruiz Picasso (UK: /ˈpæbloʊ pɪˈkæsoʊ/, US: /ˈpɑːbloʊ pɪˈkɑːsoʊ, -ˈkæs-/, Spanish: ; 25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France
Towards Guernica – Pablo Picasso’s Visual Experiments and Context. In the mid-1920s, around the time Picasso became actively involved with Surrealism, he was mainly painting interiors with still lifes, featuring objects like musical instruments and fruits. He used these traditional themes to experiment with his ideas of breaking the form and presenting the composition from multiple perspectives – aspects that soon became fundamental to Cubism.
Today, Guernica is known as Picasso’s most important political painting. For many, it represents the tragic effect war has on innocent lives. After World War II, Spaniards would hang Guernica next to Da Vinci’s The Last Supper as a form of protest against Franco’s totalitarian government. We hope you enjoy our content. Eighty years on, Picasso's haunting painting, Guernica, still resonates as an anti-war protest as much today as in 1937 Spain. Madrid (AFP) - Close to 80 years ago, Picasso painted Guernica in a Paris attic, a haunting work of art that has become a universal howl against the ravages of war, from 1937 Spain to 2017 Syria
Gelatin silver print. The Museum of Modern Art, New York. When news of the massacre reached Paris, Picasso set out to depict the atrocities for the world to see. The attack on Guernica occurred just weeks before the Exposition’s May 25 opening, and it would take Picasso until June to finish the mural. The custom-made stretcher, however, was likely built much earlier, soon after he received the commission. To support such a large canvas, it was important to have a strong, sturdy stretcher.
