One of the most alluring aspects of Afro-pop singer Salif Keita's sublime new album, "La Difference," is its intimate feel. The arrangements-at once richly textured and gracefully understated-truly give the listener a sense of Keita as a singer/songwriter.
Salif Keita turned 60 in 2009, which was also the year in which the veteran Malian singer recorded most of La Différence (although parts of the album were recorded in 2008). At that age, Keita had nothing left to prove; he had long since established himself as a major figure in Mali's Afro-pop scene. But his desire to excel remained, and he is in fine form throughout La Différence.
Malian music star Salif Keïta has dedicated his new album, La Différence, to albinos, hoping that his new songs will help fight discrimination against people who, like him, were born black with white skin. Keïta - known as the Golden Voice of Africa - puts across his message of peace, love and fraternity against a compelling backdrop of Arabic influences and traditional West African sounds. Salif Keïta has always been a musical activist, speaking out on causes close to his heart, but this time round the Malian star's songwriting message comes across even louder and clearer. Keïta's new album, La différence, weaves a subtle mix of harmonies and acoustic sounds, but lyrically speaking his songs pack an almighty punch. It is as if after years of quiet revolt the Malian singer has finally reached boiling point, bubbling over with a sense of personal injustice at crimes perpetrated against fellow albinos.

Salif Keita has matured into a fine composer and musician. His music now transcends pigeon-holing as "West African" or "ethnic" and takes its place amongst the very best of modern global music drawing from French-African griot, western jazz, deep original southern folk-blues and even European classical elements. The album's title "La Difference" is a reference to Keita's own albino genes and his championing of albinism in the African continent, where some superstition and prejudice still exists. At the same time, however, it's a general call for tolerance and "celebration of diversity" in a world where tribalism and ethnic prejudice still govern the attitudes of many.
Salif Keïta (IPA: ) (born August 25, 1949) is an afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali. He is notable not only because of his reputation as the "Golden Voice of Africa" but also because he has albinism. He is a member of the Keita royal family of Mali. Salif Keita was born a traditional prince in the village of Djoliba. He was cast out by his family and ostracized by the community because of his albinism, a sign of bad luck in Mandinka culture
