The Incomparable Fiddler - Svend Asmussen 100 Years.

Svend Asmussen (28 February 1916 – 7 February 2017) was a jazz violinist from Denmark, known as "The Fiddling Viking". A Swing style virtuoso, he played and recorded with many of the greats of Jazz, including Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Stephane Grappelli. He played publicly until 2010 when he had a blood clot, his career having spanned eight decades. At the age of 100, he died on 7 February 2017.

Although it is hard to believe, discographies list this session (co-led with fellow violinist Svend Asmussen) as Stephane Grappelli's only recording as a leader during 1963-68. Accompanied by two guitarists, bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen and a drummer, the two violinists (contemporaries whose similar styles matured in the 1930s) sound excellent on the LP, playing four standards, Toots Thielemans's "Blue Lady" and three of their originals.
