China is a studio album by the Greek electronic composer Vangelis, released in 1979. Although he had never been to China, he employed Chinese instruments and compositional styles on this concept album. It was thematically ahead of its time as the eastern cultural concepts were mostly unknown to the western audiences. It is one of his critically most acclaimed solo studio albums. It was certified silver (1985) for sales of over 60,000 copies by BPI.

China promotional LP with booklet. During the album's 40 minutes, Vangelis manages to capture many diverse elements of China and its people, at least the way it was centuries ago: its tortured history (in The Long March), their philosophy (in Yin & Yang), their story-telling (as in The Little Fete), the tranquility of its country-side (as in The Tao Of. Love), its vastness (as in Himalaya).
China’ was a concept album that combined traditional Chinese instruments, such as flutes and violins, with the banks of synthesisers, drum machines, electric pianos and so on that were also at his creative disposal. Early the following year, in January 1980, Vangelis’ new collaboration with Jon Anderson would take him back into the singles chart that he had spurned years before, and onwards to ever greater achievements.
I have never visited China, but this CD surely conjures up the feelings that I imagine it would be like.
It is a concept album based on China. Vangelis in 1979 interview said "I’ve never been there, I had the idea long before the events that placed China at the forefront of the news. For years I have been passionate about the Chinese. Although Polydor issued this album as POLD-5018, and re-issue as SPELP-19 the track timings of either were never accurate, and confusion exists as to the actual lengths of "Chung Kuo" and "The Long March".
