Alexander's Ragtime Band" is a song by Irving Berlin. It was his first major hit, in 1911. It might be regarded as a sequel to "Alexander and His Clarinet," which Berlin wrote with Ted Snyder in 1910. The earlier song is mostly concerned with a reconciliation between Alexander Adams and Eliza Johnson, but also highlights Alexander's novel musical style.

The best ragtime songs are those which capture the magic of the era. Ragtime’s golden era was from roughly 1899 to 1915, when it gave way to early jazz. Unlike jazz, ragtime wasn’t improvisational music at all. It was primarily composed for solo piano, though there are some guitar ragtime songs floating around. This ragtime songs list includes some of the top ragtime songs of all time. You might recognize the names on here as well, like Scott Joplin, who is known as the King of Ragtime.

With a new Queen album out, and a tour in the new year, let’s celebrate some of the tracks that weren’t all over the singles charts for months on en. The Night Comes Down, from the first Queen album, is the best of these. Yes, producer Roy Thomas Baker has yet to capture the full spectrum of May’s symphonic guitar attack, and the harmonies on the chorus don’t have quite the muscle Queen would later flex with ease. Mercury believed the band were being ripped off by their manager, Norman Sheffield, who also co-owned Trident Studios, and to whose production company Queen were signed.

This album could be considered a flagship of Projekt Records, another distinctive label in the gothic genre. Projekt focuses on these more ethereal, calm, soothing soundscapes (and is owned by Black Tape for a Blue Girl’s Sam Rosenthal) and Lycia fits solidly within this cohort. To me, this is what ethereal goth is: palatable to just about anyone, but mostly overlooked because of its gloom.

The Band were four-fifths Canadian – drummer Levon Helm was from Arkansas – but their second album is all American. Guitarist Robbie Robertson's songs vividly evoke the country's pioneer age ("Across the Great Divide") and the Civil War ("The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"), while reflecting the fractured state of the nation in the 1960s. This collection culls the best of that magic from 1955 to 1965.
