The album rides low keyed in the low to mid tempo range, an album that blends one song into the next so effortlessly and seamlessly even efficiently, that listening with the shuffle button engaged would only reveal the same linear but rearranged picture. Within this construct the band weaves, sometimes skillfully, while at others, more overtly, radiant and bleak tones which engage what I can only describe as ambient spoken word manifestations.

The band-named after a BBC Radiophonic Workshop recording-signed to Britain's Leaf label, on which it released the EP Prophecy (2015), debut album Channel The Spirits (2016) and single Death To The Planet (2017)  . It will manifest new realities, perceptions, levels of awareness and abilities to coexist. It is a musical expression forged in the deep mystery. Hutchings, one of the . s most prominent young saxophonists and bandleaders, inked a deal with Impulse! in 2017. As evidenced by album-opener "Because the End Is Really the Beginning," these cats have no interest in revivalism; theirs is an evolutionary new thing. A blissful synth drone introduces Hutchings' hypnotic sax before shifting into a more dynamic space as Betamax's cymbal shimmer and kick drum pronunciations signal the arrival of the previously unknown.

Lifeforce is an album in the truest sense, with each song blending into the next for continuous listening. Mostly low- to mid-tempo, the band skillfully integrates bleak and radiant tones, leading to an impressive nine-track suite of ambient, spoken-word and grime-infused compositions. Take the bookend tracks, Because the End Is Really the Beginning and The Universe Wakes Up, as examples: They’re both weightless, unfolding in a haze of foggy synth chords, faint drum fills and sullen saxophone wails, at once eliciting thoughts of impending doom and possible hope. She speaks the only words we hear on the album, crystallizing the Comet’s masterful release with blunt force impact. Last year, the label released an exuberant manifesto by one of his other main bands, Sons of Kemet. An unequivocal push forward, the album picks up where The Comet Is Coming left off in 2017, when it released an EP bearing the cheerful title Death to the Planet.
