Holy Diver is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Dio, released in 1983. Vocalist Ronnie James Dio had just finished his first tenure in Black Sabbath, whose drummer Vinny Appice he took with him to put together his own band. The roster was completed by his former band mate in Rainbow Jimmy Bain on bass and by the young guitarist Vivian Campbell, coming from the NWOBHM band Sweet Savage. The album was acclaimed by the music press and is the most successful of the band.

So it wasn't all that surprising - impressive, but not surprising - when he struck gold yet again when launching his solo vehicle, Dio, via 1983's terrific Holy Diver album. Much like those two, hallowed Sabbath LPs, Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules, Holy Diver opened at full metallic throttle with the frenetic "Stand Up and Shout," before settling into a dark, deliberate, and hypnotic groove for the timelessly epic title track - a worthy successor to glorious triumphs past like Rainbow's "Stargazer" and the Sabs' "Sign of the Southern Cross.

In June 2009, Dio told the NME: "'Holy Diver' is the metal tune that will not die. For some reason, that album and the song really hit a chord with people. Killswitch Engage did a version of it and I saw them do it at a festival recently where the reaction to their version was wonderful. But it's not something that gets resurrected every once in a while, it's just always there.

Holy Diver is the potential Dio had always showed, fully unleashed: it became a heavy metal blueprint on which many groups that followed would be heavily influenced by. Dio held the same ethic throughout its career: this band was here to bring you heavy ing metal the way it should be brought. While this has made their work fairly consistent, it also made certain Holy Diver was never bested: this record stands on lonely heights. The epic title track relies more on the singer's performance than anything else on the album, and it's good for him that it just so happens his vocal performance is one of the best in his career. The mystical intro is of course another song trademark, and Campbell's solo and slower playing throughout the song are very tasteful.
