John Lennon recorded his version of the song for his 1975 album Rock 'n' Roll. Lennon's remake was his last hit prior to his five-year retirement from the music industry. Lennon filmed a performance of the song for The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975. On May 3, 1975 this version was in its second of two weeks at the peak position on the US Hot 100, right in front of King's comeback hit "Supernatural Thing - Part I" at Both tunes fell off the top 40 the next week and off the chart the week after that.

STAND BY ME Previous to that album I never let Phil Spector take charge of any production. I had always co-produced. But on the Rock'n'Roll album it took me about three weeks to convince him that I didn't want to co-produce and I wouldn't be sitting in the driver's seat next to him. I wanted to just be the singer, age fifteen, and sing these old songs I remembered well, we both ended up drinking. So I don't know, it just got into a big madhouse.
