The Perfumed Garden was the title given by John Peel to his 1967 late-night programme on the British pirate radio station, Radio London. After several years of work in US commercial pop radio, Peel joined the station in March 1967, on returning to the UK from California. As well as various slots on Radio London's usual three-hour daytime shows, he was allotted the midnight to 2 . programme, then called London After Midnight.

In short: avoid anything put out by Past & Present if you're looking for decent sound.I don't think I've heard a single release on this label that isn't sourced from vinyl. This isn't a problem per se, as there are lots of vinyl sourced CD's out there that sound great. The problem is Past & Present's patented unnecessary tweaking and shitty mastering. Is a song on this set available elsewhere? Then there's a 99,9 % chance that it's better sounding on that CD. How about this, by the way: some of the stuff on this set is taken from poorly encoded mp3 files. Talk about value for money! You might as well listen to ye olde grandpa's 96 kbps mp3's from the dark, medieval days of the Napster era.The above is true for pretty much everything released on Past & Present, Particles, Psychic Circle and similarly shady labels -- although in their defence, some are better than others.
Only the first two volumes were on the original Psycho label. The third was pieced together some time later (late 80s/early 90s) and as for the final two volumes.... just thrown together to make a 5 CD set I assume. The first volume of Perfumed Garden is absolutely essential containing many of the greatest mid 60s UK 'freakbeat' sides. Quality was already dipping by the 2nd volume but it still has many highlights. The third volume dips slightly lower still - but once again there's enough on there to make it a decent investment. What is going on with the final two volumes though - dodgy prog basically. Not for me guv - best to find the first instalment of the set and 'listen to the sky'.
