Streets of Bakersfield" is a 1973 song written by Homer Joy and popularized by Buck Owens. In 1988, Owens recorded a duet version with country singer Dwight Yoakam, which became one of Yoakam's first No. 1 Hot Country Singles hits. According to Homer Joy, the original songwriter, he was approached in 1972 by representatives from Buck Owens' studio in Bakersfield, California, about recording a "Hank Williams Sr. soundalike-album".

Duo topped the charts with the duet in 1988, and eight days later performed it on 'Austin City Limits'. In 1986, Dwight Yoakam delivered a rhinestone-studded debut LP, Guitars, Cadillacs, Et. Etc. To anyone with a sense of country-music history, it was obvious Yoakam, a Kentucky native who broke into the genre on the West Coast, owed a huge debt to another sparkling entertainer: Buck Owens. He even dedicated that debut album to the legendary performer. Two albums later, Yoakam upped the ante on classic country with the magical Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room, and in the process.

Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens met back in 1988 in Bakersfield, California. Owens was a "gentleman rancher" at that point in his career, according to Yoakam. Owens, who hadn't sung a duet in years, showed up to cheer on an adoring Yoakam at his concert. They ended up singing together on that stage in Bakersfield and the rest is history. CMT asked Dwight Yoakam back in 2007 if he would include a solo version of "Streets of Bakersfield" on an album. He said, "Never considered that for a minute. I would never have that song any other way in my life except with hi. This classic duet version, performed in 1988, captures the crisp musicianship of them both and why they were such dear friends. Owens passed away in 2006 and Yoakam paid homage to him with an album of covers.

Hey, you don't know me, but you don't like me You say you care less how I feel But how many of you that sit and judge me Ever walked the streets of Bakersfield? Spent sometime in San Francisco I spent a night there in the can They threw this drunk man in my jail cell I took fifteen dollars from that man Left him my watch and my old house key Don't want folks thinkin' that I'd steal Then I thanked him as I was leaving And I headed out for Bakersfield  .
