The Blues Makers: Natural Blues II is described as a journey through African and American blues, which begs a large question; "what is African blues?" The dozen or so tracks by African artists come nowhere near answering it, since musicians like Baaba Maal from Senegal and Boubacar Traore (Mali) have almost nothing in common with John Lee Hooker or Etta James and the blues' ancestral connections with Africa are hardly going to be revealed by Angelique Kidjo (Benin) singing the Gershwins' "Summertime". But think of this double CD as an opportunity to wander in two.
