Ernest Ranglin - the greatest Studio One session guitar man. He plays on the majority of the ska and reggae singles - My Boy Lollipop, The Rivers of Babylon et. tc. He is also a great jazz player, having recorded with Sonny Stitt, among others. Below The Bassline is his recent "comeback" recording - a mellow and very very groovy jazz/reggae fusion. When I heard it, I thought it sounded like Monty Meets Sly and Robbie, except with guitar upfront instead of the piano.

Renews automatically. Unlike many Jamaican jazz albums of yesteryear, this 1958 effort doesn't embrace big band as it instead plays straight bop. The quartet uses no brass instruments as the guitar is complimented by traps, piano and bass. On it, the Ernest Ranglin Trio delivers an amazing performance. It wouldn't be until albums like "Jazz Jamaica" that Ranglin would combine jazz and Caribbean music. Instead, this 1958 release will appeal to listeners looking for the Jamaican Wes Montgomery, George Benson or Grant Green.
