After a philosophy, psychology and zoology studies at the University of Vienna, he was in 1905, Dr. phil. In Vienna he became in 1906 a member of the academic symposium Corps. 1919 moved Kolbenheyer to Tübingen, where he lived as a freelance writer until 1932.
