A Volksdeutscher from the Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he attended school in Budapest before furthering his education in Karlsbad and Vienna. Kolbenheyer studied philosophy, psychology and zoology at the University of Vienna and earned his PhD in 1905. He became a freelance writer and came to specialise in historical novels that were characterised by their fixation with all things German. In 1908 he published Amor Dei, a novel about life and thinking of the Jewish-Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza, which made Kolbenheyer fairly known
Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer was an Austrian novelist, poet and playwright. One of the best-known writers of the Third Reich, much of his work was banned for a period following Germany's defeat. Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer ( born December 30, 1878 in Budapest, † April 12, 1962 in Munich) was an Austrian novelist, playwright and lyricist. The son of the architect Franz Kolbenheyer and Karlsbaderin Amalie Hein attended high school in Eger. After a philosophy, psychology and zoology studies at the University of Vienna, he was in 1905, Dr. phil. In Vienna he became in 1906 a member of the academic symposium Corps. 1919 moved Kolbenheyer to Tübingen, where he lived as a freelance writer until 1932.
