King of Rock is the second studio album by hip hop group Run–D. released on January 21, 1985 by Profile Records. The album was produced by Russell Simmons and Larry Smith. King of Rock became the first rap album released on CD. The album saw the group adopting a more rock-influenced sound, with several tracks prominently featuring heavy guitar riffs. The song "Roots, Rap, Reggae" features Yellowman became one of the first hybrids of rap and dancehall.

The third album, actually planned as the fourth, called Second Coming was an improvement instrumentally but by now, mystifyingly, his amazing voice box was in shreds - the best track was a 7 minute instrumental. 33 years later we got the third reprise album, Southern Child, as uncommercial as its predecessor but at least it was something new and interesting (and his voice was again powerful, albeit strangely pitched ). The explosive Richard is found whittling away on his country home back porch, and is surrounded not by saxes and electric guitars, but by mandolins !

Yet without formally crossing into rock and roll, King forged an awareness of blues within the rock realm, particularly in the Sixties and Seventies. Born on a cotton plantation in tiny Itta Bena, Mississippi in 1925, King moved to Memphis, Tennessee in his early twenties with the intention of making his living playing the blues. King in London (1971), made with a host of British rock musicians; and Riding With the King (2000), a collaboration with Eric Clapton. King won Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Blues Recording for Live at the Apollo (1991) and Blues Summit (1993). King came to the attention of yet another generation of younger listeners when he recorded When Love Comes to Town in 1988 with U2 for their Rattle and Hum album and movie.
