Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun) is a winter solstice holiday which used to be celebrated by the Romans on December 25th, in dedication to King Helios. It is a feast day observed as the point when the sun renews itself, the cold winter is defeated, and the sun is reborn once again. There is also claims it was influenced by Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (Birth of the Unconquered Sun). However, this was proposed on Dec. 25th by the pagan Roman emperor Aurelian in 275 AD– after the dates of published works from the Saints Irenaeus (130 - 202 AD) and Sextus Africus (160 - 240 AD), who I will get to in a moment. Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (the Birth of the Invincible Sun ) was a celebration dedicated to Mitra, identified with the Roman god Sol, or the Sun. Sol Invictus was an ancient cult, originating in Persia, but revered mainly in Rome, from where it also received its name. The cult was introduced by Emperor Aurelian in 274 CE. Festive was devoted to Mitra, identified with the Roman god Sol, meaning the Sun. The holiday commemorated his birth in the mountains of Zagros. The Romans on that day gifted each other and made wishes; kissed under the mistletoe.
