George Orson Welles was an American actor, director, writer, and producer who worked in theatre, radio, and film. He is remembered for his innovative work in all three: in theatre, most notably Caesar (1937), a Broadway adaptation of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar; in radio, the 1938 broadcast "The War of the Worlds", one of the most famous in the history of radio; and in film, Citizen Kane (1941), consistently ranked as one of the all-time.

Welles scares nation. Orson Welles causes a nationwide panic with his broadcast of War of the Worlds -a realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth. Orson Welles was only 23 years old when his Mercury Theater company decided to update . Wells’ 19th-century science fiction novel War of the Worlds for national radio. Despite his age, Welles had been in radio for several years, most notably as the voice of The Shadow in the hit mystery program of the same name. War of the Worlds was not planned as a radio hoax, and Welles had little idea of the havoc it would cause

Mbon
Despite the claim on the cover of this LP being "electronically rechanneled to simulate stereo", the LP itself is completely mono, with no trace of any simulated stereo effect -- nor is "stereo" mentioned anywhere on the disc labels. I think this was just a ploy to sell it at the "stereo" price (back when stereo LPs cost more than mono ones).

A great example of how the archives of recorded time has been preserved. The passages on this LP are from the actual radio broadcast, Not something taken from a tape, they are archived from the original 4 large 16in acetates that were cut directly from the radio transmission. Note that this whole concept was done live in a studio with actors, sound effects records, gadgets and many other noise makers. It represents a moment in time when the "average joe" had their ears glued to their radio tube sets in utter hysteria. This was an performance where the stage was the eardrum of each human who heard it. Too bad some people took it too seriously.
