Maria Bethânia Viana Telles Veloso (Portuguese pronunciation: ; born June 18, 1946), known by her stage name Maria Bethânia, is a legendary Brazilian singer and songwriter. Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, she started her career in Rio de Janeiro in 1964 with the show "Opinião" ("Opinion"). This is the CD reissue of the 1978 LP Álibi, which sold one million copies, projecting Maria Bethânia as a popular romantic artist after her being inadvertently connected with protest songs due to her success at the show Opinião. Álibi," a bolero by Djavan, "O Meu Amor" (Chico Buarque) with special guest Alcione, and "Explode Coração" (Gonzaguinha) all became hits in her interpretation, solidifying her expression in a contemporary, deep romanticism freed from the excesses of the past Brazilian tradition.
