The Darling Buds are an alternative rock band from Newport, South Wales. The band formed in 1986 and were named after the H. E. Bates novel The Darling Buds of May – a title taken in turn, from the third line of Shakespeare's Sonnet 18: "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May". Influenced by the catchy simple sound of the early Beatles as well as that of Blondie, the band created melodic, hook-driven, short-duration singles.

The Darling Buds' first studio LP is a potent mix of Blondie and Velocity Girl. Not as streetwise as the former but rougher than the latter, it's a solid collection of 12 straight-ahead pop-punk songs, some of which were re-worked and glossed up from earlier EPs released on the Native label. It's not earth shattering, and the relentlessly upbeat nature throughout could be better taken in moderation, but the excellent performance from this Wales group makes for a fine debut.

It's great news that "Pop Said", the Darling Buds debut album (for Epic) is to get a timely reissue. Released back in 1988 "Pop Said" deserved more success than initially recieved. Hopefully Cherry Red will be able to reissue the two albums that followed - both classic and unjustly ignored. Full of hook laden classic power pop it's time to reaquaint yourself with this album. 5 people found this helpful.
