The Soft Boys were a rock band led by Robyn Hitchcock primarily during the 1970s, whose initially old-fashioned music style of k became part of the neo-psychedelia scene with the release of Underwater Moonlight. The band formed in 1976 in Cambridge, England as Dennis and the Experts comprising Robyn Hitchcock (guitar), Rob Lamb (half-brother of radio host and author Charlie Gillett) guitar, Andy Metcalfe (bass), and Morris Windsor (drums).

Soft Boys – Underwater Moonlight (1980) Today it’s hard to understand how the lightly psychedelic pop-rock of the Soft Boys was ever considered anything close to punk. Between the shambling noise-rock of second album Jane from Occupied England lie ambient experiments, sound collages and poignant piano detours from Sudden’s brother Epic Soundtracks.

The Soft Boys were a pop band during the punk era led by Robyn Hitchcock, whose initially old fashioned music style of k became part of the neo-psychedelia scene with the release of Underwater Moonlight. An album financed by Radar Records was recorded at Rockfield Studios in 1978, at the same time Rush was recording Hemispheres there. The resultant album was never released although one or two of the tracks have had subsequent release as part of compilations. This phrase from Jamaican patois was adopted ironically as a name by the Soft Boys, a London rock group of the 1970. ontemporary slang.

Underwater Moonlight is the second studio album by English rock band The Soft Boys, released on 28 June 1980 by record label Armageddon. These themes were inherited from a variety of sources, including the Tin Pan Alley pop tradition, folk music and rhythm, as a result, it has been seen as articulating the concerns of this group in both style and lyrics.

The band formed in 1976 as Dennis and the Experts and featured Robyn Hitchcock (main songwriter and singer), who later went on to a distinguished solo career, and later Kimberley Rew (lead guitarist), who went on to be part of Katrina and the Waves. Original members were Robyn Hitchcock (guitar), Rob Lamb - half brother of Charlie Gillett - (guitar), Andy Metcalfe (bass), and Morris Windsor (drums). Alan Davies replaced Lamb after only four gigs late.
