Complete your Beethoven - Mstislav Rostropovich ‧ Sviatoslav Richter collection. Lovely music, fantastic playing and the pressing is good but no dynamic in anyway. It is a Mono recording from 64' and the simplicity is understood. Reply Notify me Helpful.

Mstislav Rostropovich, Sviatoslav Richter. Thus, the Beethoven sonatas here are as athletic as their later studio recordings for Philips but with more fire. More importantly for fans, these recordings of Brahms and Grieg's sonatas are the duos' only extant performances of these works together, and they prove as muscular and passionate as one could hope. Rostropovich was the work's dedicatee, and the affection and dedication he brings to the cello part is only matched by the strength and sensitivity Richter brings to the piano, and the combined result is a performance that is for all intents and purposes definitive. Of course, most fans will already know this performance from its previous issues - there was an especially fine transfer released by EMI in 1997 - but those who do not will have to hear it.

Beethoven's complete Sonatas for Cello and Piano had seldom been played in their entirety in the world. The British premier was a century and a half late. The Third and Fifth Sonatas seen in this video are recorded by the BBC. To measure the importance of the event, one just needs to refer to the stature of the musicians on stage. They dominate the history of 20th century music. They also premiere Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante in 1952, with Richter conducting and Rostropovich on the cello. Over the course of their playing together, they perform most of the cello and piano repertoire. Personally, they did not form a very close duo. The end of their relations dates from the recording of Beethoven's Triple Concerto with David Oïstrakh and Karajan: "There was on one side Karajan and Rostropovich and on the other, Oïstrakh and me, says Richter.
