Christmas in Poland is a major annual celebration, as in most countries of the Christian world. The observance of Christmas developed gradually over the centuries, beginning in ancient times; combining old Polish pagan customs with the religious ones introduced after the Christianization of Poland by the Catholic Church. Later influences include mutual permeating of local traditions and various folk cultures.
ALBUM NOTES: Gleeful Memories of a Former Polish-American Choirboy. Biographical Notes: Bob Johnson is a Polish-American with a deep appreciation for Polish music, especially kolędy i pastorałki. As a boy growing up in Buffalo, Bob was an active member of the St. Stanislaus Boys Choir and a piano student at the Villa Maria School of Music. He has produced numerous recordings, including Polish Village Christmas Vols. This is the only carol on the CD that does not include guitar.
Christmas Eve dinner, also known as Wigilia, starts when the first star appears in the sky. Nothing may be eaten until all members of the family have broken the Christmas wafers ( opłatek ) together and exchanged wishes for good health and prosperity. During the meal, all guests should taste a bit of everything. According to tradition, bits of hay are spread beneath the tablecloth as a reminder that Christ was born in a manger. Also, there is almost always an empty place left at the table Polish Christmas traditions are some of the most enchanting composites of Polish culture and heritage. Leaving a chair empty at the Christmas table may be one of the most popular customs, but few people know its interesting history. The tradition calls for twelve traditional courses to be served during the Polish Christmas Eve.
