Maurice Jarre's score for the 1971 film Soleil Rouge - a samurai-Western hybrid starring Charles Bronson and Toshiro Mifune - is as idiosyncratic and distinctive as the movie itself, employing an arsenal of exotic instruments to create music that fuses traditions from the Far East and the Old West. Red Sun - or, if you're the pretentious sort, "Soleil rouge" - is an ambitious mash-up of two cinematic fads that ran rampant in the 1970s: the stylish European western and the Asian martial arts spectacle, or, to be more specific to THIS movie, the chambara (or samurai) opera. Chambara" - for those who dunno - and now who's being pretentious, eh? - is an onomatopoeia that describes the sound of swords clashing. I never realized from my old murky VHS copy that Jarre mixes a blend of Anglo/Japanese themes making it atmospheric and soaring at the same time.
