Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Liszt - Piano Concerto No. 1 In E-flat Major. The early part of the 19th century was a time of great change in music. The shift from a composer depending on the patronage of the church or royalty, to being an independent artist began with Mozart, as he was one of the first major composers that was free-lance. Beethoven also was a free-lance composer in the sense that he was not a paid member of a royal court. Franz Liszt was in his prime as a touring virtuoso in the 1830's and 1840's when the composer/pianists were in full swing. Although he wrote a few pieces for piano and orchestra (one of them being Malédiction for piano and strings) it is interesting that he wrote no piano concertos during this time, at least ones that he finished, performed and published. The Piano Concerto No. 1 wasn't written until 1849.

Redlands Symphony proudly presents TCHAIKOVSKY's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, op. 23. Discover little-known secrets and interesting discorse on its history, creation, and performance. Tchaikovsky would eventually develop into a major figure in 19th century music, due in large part to the influence of two Russian-born, but German-trained, brothers: Anton and Nikolai Rubinstein. Anton, a brilliant pianist often favorably compared to Franz Liszt, was director of the Conservatory and a teacher of orchestration; he was the first strong influence on the young composer’s career. In 1866, Nikolai, an almost equally adept pianist, became the first director of the Moscow Conservatory. In this position, he was able to offer a teaching post to Tchaikovsky.

Adagio Sostenuto Assai - Allegro Agitato Assai. Liszt's visionary art combining piano and orchestra in taking turns up in front of the music is accompanied with excellent sound in this particular disc. London Symphony Orchestra sounds fresh and energetic, adding palette of colors to Richter's focused, sparkling performance. I still have to decide whether Richter's interpretation of the wonderful grand Sonata is better that those of Argerich and Pollini in my book (probably not), but it only makes this CD indispensable for Liszt music lovers. A disc beyond any critique.
