At the Yiddish Theatre captures the late Yiddish star's greatest hits from her days in the Yiddish theater, many of which were written and produced by her husband Yonkel Kalich.
Molly Picon started performing in the Yiddish theatre of New York City when she was only 6. At the age of 12, she was the new star of the 2nd avenue Yiddish stage. Throughout her life, especially in her prime years during the 1930's and 1940's she starred in many Second Avenue Yiddish theater productions, as well as Broadway shows, and Hollywood pictures. Molly Picon was known for her comic acting and beautiful singing voice. Her most well-known film was Yitn Mit'n Fidl (1936). She emerged into the Broaday scene a few years later, in the 1940's
Molly Picon (Yiddish: מאָלי פּיקאָן; February 28, 1898 – April 5, 1992) was an American actress of stage, screen and television, as well as a lyricist and dramatic storyteller. Picon was born as Małka Opiekun in New York City, the daughter of Polish Jewish emigrants: Clara (née Ostrow), a wardrobe mistress, and Louis Opiekun, a shirtmaker.
The Yiddish theatre’s greatest actress began her career at age five touring the small time with a singing and dancing act called The Four Seasons. She returned briefly to vaudeville as a star at the Palace in the late twenties and early thirties, and made the occasional detour into film and the Broadway stage – but her meat and potatoes was always on Second Avenue, the Yiddish Rialto. Nonetheless, you can also check out some of her few performances in Hollywood films, such as Come Blow Your Horn (1963), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), and Murder on Flight 502 (1975), a delicious rip-off of Airport 1975 that I have seen no less than four times. Ms. Picon passed away in 1992.
She was an actress, singer, and comedian whose career spanned over 70 years. Debuting in the Yiddish Theater at the age of 6 she emerged as a respected American actress, performing with Frank Sinatra in Come Blow Your Horn (1963), and having starring roles on Broadway in Milk & Honey (1961) and the film, Fiddler on the Roof (1971). Molly Picon’s career followed Yiddish culture from the shtetl into mainstream America. Small and very youthful-looking she often had to fight to be taken seriously . Molly Picon, the comedic actress and singer who lightened and brightened the often dolorous themes of Yiddish theater with shows that were sprightly operettas, died yesterday in Lancaster, Pa. She was 94 years old. She died in her sleep at the home of her sister, Helen Silverblatt, said Seymour Rexite, president of the Hebrew Actors Union.
In the 1920’s she was the doyenne of the Yiddish Theater; her first English role didn’t come until she was in her early 40's. You might recognize he. he was Yente the Matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof. Her looks were distinct and askew, elegant and mannish. She rarely wore women’s clothes on stage. com/watch?v pPCCEE7iIH4.
