Elenco tracce Nascondi Riconoscimenti. Symphony No. 5. Composed By – Dmitri r – Leopold StokowskiOrchestra – The Stadium Symphony Orchestra Of New York. A1. 1st Movement: Moderato. It is almost as if Stokowski had been listening to Shostakovich's Quartets and saw this symphony in that light. The interplay of the orchestra catches my attention again and again. There is a more oriental atmosphere here than in any other interpretation.

The Leningrad première of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 took place on 9 August 1942 during the Second World War, while the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) was under siege by Nazi German forces. Dmitri Shostakovich had intended the piece to be premièred by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, but because of the siege, that group was evacuated from the city, as was the composer himself. The world première of the symphony was held on 5 March in Kuybyshev with the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra

Concert: BBC symphony orchestra. By WILL CRUTCHFIELDJAN. It does the Shostakovich well, that much is certain. The 11th is Shostakovich's symphonic representation of the protest at the Winter Palace in 1905, and its bloody dispersal by the Czar's police. It is a prime example of the symphonic form that has flourished best in the 20th century: programmatic, big in musical dimensions and orchestral resources, demanding on the players' technique, serious in intent. There is no question about his musical gifts, but this listener was left with the suspicion that the Tchaikovsky concerto is not special to him, that perhaps he was playing it because young virtuosos are supposed to. His new orchestra has had a great tradition in performing many of Shostakovichs works in America for the first time. The theme of the first album with Shostakovichs 10th Symphony and Passacaglia from Lady Macbeth is a reflection on Shostakovich and Stalin. Lady Macbeth was the piece which brought criticism of his work and the radical change of style, whereas Symphony 10 is from the year Stalin died: the long arc of censorship of Shostakovich until Stalins death, and the composers response to this. Every time I ve seen him conduct - in Boston, Tanglewood, New York, and Bayreuth - he has set off brushfires of intensity. Nelsons produces full-body impact: instead of shattering about your ears, the sound engulfs you. He is a master at controlling dynamics to create a kinetic, fluctuating mass.

When politics is mixed with art, the artist needs to beware. Shostakovich is a case in point. During the Second World War, the Soviet Union used the music of Shostakovich as a rallying cry for the defeat of Nazi aggression. Shostakovich wrote parts of his 7th Symphony, nicknamed 'Leningrad' during the 900-day Nazi siege of Leningrad. That symphony in particular was not only used by the Soviet Union as a propaganda tool, but the symphony was internationally popular during the war as a representation of opposition to Nazi totalitarianism and militarism
