John Lennon, 1969 Anthology. The Ballad Of John And Yoko's bass line and closing guitar riff bear a strong resemblance to the 1957 song Lonesome Tears In My Eyes by The Rock And Roll Trio. The Beatles had covered the song in their earliest days, and in July 1963 recorded it for the radio show Pop Go The Beatles. It was released in 1994 on Live At The BBC. John Lennon’s uptempo ballad was written in Paris during his and Yoko’s honeymoon in 1969. It is the story of their wedding in Gibraltar, and through Paris to their bed in week in Amsterdam, a short jaunt to Vienna and back to London. Recorded with Paul only, since George and Ringo were out of town. Paul played drums as well as Bass. John played both the rhythm and lead guitar lines. This was the Beatles last single in the UK, and the only one recorded in stereo. It was included on the Beatles compilation album Hey Jude, released in 1970 in North America

However, the track that became The Ballad of John and Yoko never landed on a Beatles studio album. Since John recorded it much like he did his first solo album and wanted it released quick, it went out as a single instead of on the final albums. John and Paul recorded ‘Ballad’ on their own shortly after the wedding. John Lennon and Yoko Ono pictured in London, 18th April 1969. About three weeks after his wedding, John was back in London with an apparent itch to record.

John and Yoko's decision to get married came very suddenly on March 14, 1969, just two days after Paul McCartney married Linda Eastman. On March 14, John and Yoko were being driven to Poole in Dorset to visit John's Aunt Mimi. John Lennon and Paul McCartney worked on this without the other Beatles because of the hastily called session. The Ballad of John & Yoko" was banned in Phoenix- neither of the Top 40 stations- KRUX or KRIZ would play it. I happened to be visiting my grandparent in Fla, where I heard it.

In March ’69, just after marrying Yoko Ono, John got to work on a new song about the adventures surrounding their wedding. Taking the same approach the band did on Let It Be, Lennon kept things rocking and spare on the tune. However, the track that became The Ballad of John and Yoko never landed on a Beatles studio album.

The Ballad of John and Yoko is a song written by John Lennon, attributed to Lennon–McCartney as was the custom, and released by the Beatles as a single in May 1969. Several US radio stations declined to broadcast the song because of what they saw as sacrilegious use of the words Christ and crucify in the chorus: Christ, you know it ain’t easy, You know how hard it can be, The way things are going, They’re gonna crucify me.
