No Prayer for the Dying is the eighth studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It marks their first line-up change since 1982; guitarist Adrian Smith left the band during the pre-production phase, unhappy with the musical direction it was taking, and only having contributed to one song, "Hooks in You".

Released by Quartet Records in 2014 containing music from A Prayer For The Dying (1987). Assembling the complete score for CD release has been a great challenge. A set of stereo mixes was incomplete; a set of 24-track masters was also incomplete. Putting them together, there were still three cues missing, but thanks to the stereo music stem provided by MGM (thankfully the film was mixed in stereo), we were able to complete the puzzle

There's an unknown director's cut for which Mike Hodges originally had John Scott to compose the music. However the producers decided that they didn't like it and hired Bill Conti to redo the music. Also, after watching Hodges' cut, Samuel Goldwyn recut the film for American audience who wanted an action movie. Based on the Jack Higgins novel of the same name, A Prayer for the Dying follows an IRA hitman (Rourke) who has seen enough and wants to come clean. Chased the cops and the IRA as well as a notorious gangster, Rourke (as Martin Fallon) has to protect a priest who he has implicated in a murder. While some of the supporting actors aren't the most impressive, I think that this is Rourke's best work.

Inevitably you end up with a projected Freudian father figure clothed with the biblical attributes of anger, pity, vengeance, judgment - and, just occasionally, love. It conjures up a picture of the "God of the stained-glass window", and smacks of white robes, bushy beards and beetling brows. My youngsters found it risible. Prayer can be viewed as an existential colloquy, an ongoing dialogue with the perceived world, a conversation with what lies four and square before our eyes. The dialogue can be internal, and may emerge as an emotional response to the physical world. Our interactive dialogue with the world is a continuous prayer. The response may be physical, such as an exuberant sexual communion with another man or woman, or it takes on an aesthetic shape - as when we are, for example, uplifted by music. The dialogue can be external, exemplified in our daily speech.
