Hip hop soul is a subgenre of contemporary R&B music, most popular during the early and mid 1990s, which fuses R&B/gospel singing with hip hop musical production. The subgenre had evolved from a previous R&B subgenre, new jack swing, which had incorporated hip-hop influences into R&B music. By contrast, hip hop soul is, as described in The Encyclopedia of African American Music, "quite literally soul singing over hip hop grooves".

This list provides a guide to the most important hip hop albums, as determined by their presence on compiled lists of significant albums: see the "Lists consulted" section for full details. Inclusion on a list is indicated by numbering after each release. The brief accompanying notes offer an explanation as to why each album has been considered important. The organization of the list is by date of release, ranging from Run-D. s eponymous debut in 1984 to Jay-Z's 2001 album, The Blueprint.

Ambersunshower (born Ambersunshower Nadine Miligros Villenuevo Smith) is an R&B singer and former member of the hip hop duo Groove Garden. Gee Street Records released Ambersunshower's debut solo album, Walter T. Smith, in 1996. A single from the album, "Running Song", later appeared on the soundtrack album from the film The Great White Hype, while another song, "Look Around My Window", was included on the Senseless soundtrack.

The second single from their debut album People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, Bonita Applebum is ATCQ’s first ode to female beauty. Humorous and cheeky, you just gotta love Bonita Applebum. 22. Ghostface Killah - All That I Got Is You (1996). In this heartbreakingly beautiful autobiographical song, Ghost tells the story of his impoverished childhood and the struggles growing up. He raps about how he grew up in a three-bedroom apartment without his father who left him at the age of six. Growing up poor he experienced hard living conditions like Pluckin’ roaches out the cereal. De La Soul’s scathing attack on what they perceived as an ongoing decline in Hip Hop music and Hip Hop Culture. As relevant – if not more relevant – today as it was twenty years ago, this track turned out to be highly prophetic and stands as one of the staples of De La Soul’s discography.

Fans of the acclaimed Durham, NC trio Little Brother are well acquainted with 9th Wonder. Together with emcees Phonte and Big Pooh, the gifted producer orchestrated the group’s critically applauded first two albums, The Listening (2003) and The Minstrel Show (2005). One of the most sought-after studio wizards in the business, 9th Wonder has collaborated with countless musical luminaries including Erykah Badu, De La Soul, Jay-Z, Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, Raekwon, and Talib Kweli. Indeed, the 31-track album is the perfect manifestation of Dilla’s ingenious approach to flipping soul, funk, jazz and hip-hop samples in never-heard-before ways to create truly original, never derivative compositions. Describing her son’s recording process for Donuts to The Fader in December of 2006, Maureen Yancey explained that He tried to go over each beat and make sure that it was something different and make sure that there was nothing that he wanted to change.

Love has been at hip-hop’s center since its birth. That’s including love of the game, the love of money, and love of one’s self. Of course, rap has opened up enough to speak of loving someone else. LL Cool J did so in 1984’s I Need Love, when he spoke in a fragile voice about being a lonely superstar on the road. That lent itself to parody, though: How does one get so soft after talking so tough on their debut? But things have obviously changed since the ‘80s. Future opened up his heart post-Ciara for one of his best songs, and Kanye West stuffed acid house, Nina Simone, and a Chief Keef feature into an album only to close it with a soul-sampling dedication to his now wife. Nicki Minaj also managed to throw in a cute Slick Rick reference in one of the great love songs of our time. Whether they’re about a guy relearning how to love or a lover swearing up and down about what he’ll do in the bedroom, the best romantic hip-hop songs makes it clear the passions are genuine and direct
