Mark how the Lark and Linnet sing. So ceas'd the rival Crew when Purcell came. We beg not Hell, our Orpheus to restore. The Heav'nly Quire, who heard his Notes from High.
Henry Purcell (/ˈpɜːrsəl, pərˈsɛl/) (c. 10 September 1659 – 21 November 1695) was an English composer. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers; no later native-born English composer approached his fame until Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams, William Walton and Benjamin Britten in the 20th century.

One of the songs of Purcell, here alternated with instrumental pieces by Blow, contains the line 'Nor let my homely death embroider'd be with scutcheon or with elegy', but it is one with which Blow and others could not concur. Few countertenors are as finely matched in artistry and vocal quality as Lesne and Dugardin who, in both the solo songs and duets, wring every drop of emotion from the texts with sincerity, technically effortless mese di voce and admirably clear diction. The instrumental support faithfully shadows every vocal nuance throughout.
