Impersonator is the third studio album by Canadian pop duo Majical Cloudz, released on May 21, 2013 by Matador Records and Mythryl Records. It was their first album on Matador after signing with the label in February 2013. It was also the group's first album to feature producer Matthew Otto as a member, following the departure of Matthew E. Duffy after the release of II in 2011. The album was longlisted for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize.

Impersonator is Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto's second album as Majical Cloudz. Like their live shows, it is searingly, emotionally direct, extraordinarily sung, and hypnotically focused, made special by Welsh's sense of emotional urgency. Devon Welsh sings these lines on Impersonator, his second album with synth programmer Matthew Otto under the name Majical Cloudz. And this role- the Jehovah's Witness ringing your doorbell at 7 . to save your life, the AA member interrupting your lunch hour to explain how his fear of being loved led him to key your Volkswagen last April- is the role that Welsh plays on Impersonator.

In 2012, Montreal producer Devon Welsh introduced the world to Majical Cloudz with II, a collection of a few years' worth of his glitch-pop productions featuring contributions by like-minded friends and collaborators like Grimes. It was a sputtering, often messy affair, offering a different take on the dark, layered, and sometimes overwhelming sounds being explored by other Montreal artists like Doldrums, Blue Hawaii, and Grimes.

Don’t be thrown by the name: The music Montreal duo Majical Cloudz makes is cold, stark and confrontationally intimate. Over a backdrop of loops and electronic drones patient to the point of static, Devon Welsh bellows lyrics so naked they’re embarrassing to hear, let alone repeat. His bravery lies in the fact that he doesn’t mince words. His talent lies in the fact that so many of his words are universal, however dramatic

Produced by Matt Otto & Devon Welsh. See how I'm faking my side of it I'm a liar, I say I make music I've got time for familiar faces I wanna feel like somebody's darling. See how I've almost decided That I'd lose myself if I tried it I told you that I've been writing This song is proof that I'm trying.

Impersonator is an album that sees life as fleeting–that death and the end of things is an ever present reality. The obvious conclusion is to hold tight to the people and things in life that mean something, but that’s too neat of a sentiment for Majical Cloudz. Both of these elements are the strongest and most unique thing Majical Cloudz has (or had) going for them. Only now am I realizing the beauty.
