1978's Love Island found Deodato concocting his own ineffable brew of fusion and funky disco, with the help of friends and cover songs along the way. Love Island finds him unleashing a nice selection of songs which are all pleasant to the ear. The album could almost be considered a concept album, every song title apparently revolving around jungle tropics, warm winds and sandy beaches. The album kicks off with 'Area Code 808' which places the initial action in Hawaii, a twitchy extended fusion revolving around quite a nice funky bass line

His second album, Deodato 2, reached number 19 on the Billboard album chart, while the single "Rhapsody in Blue" reached No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. His interpretation of Pavane pour une infante défunte ("Pavane for a Dead Princess") by Maurice Ravel was used in the 1970s by an Australian television station as background music. His 1979 single "Night Cruiser", from the album of the same name, earned him a third Grammy nomination, for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.
