This colorful character created his own whimsical music universe with ingredients from the traditional rhythm & blues, funk, Creole roots music, psychedelic rock and voodoo rituals. After the albums Gris-Gris, Babylon, Remedies, and The Sun, Moon & Herbs, he took leave of the voodoo part properly and he on more popular music, such as funk, jazz and traditional music from New Orleans

What makes Locked Down different from Dr John albums of the last two or three decades is that it marks a – hugely successful – attempt by r Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys, to urge Dr John to re-engage with a more adventurous way of working. As with the last Black Keys album El Camino, all the music here was written in the studio, and it all gleams with new-minted urgency. The album begins with the barking of stray dogs and strange cawing, and from these wordless threats, the thundering beat of the title track begins and we’re plunged into Locked Down’s universe: confusion, bad feeling, gunfire, and prison. As with a gangsta rap album, here Dr John lets fly with the bad-boy narrative of his young life.

Locked Down is a perfect match! The album is more personal than your typical Dr. John fare. Auerbach has mentioned that he wanted Dr. John to talk from the Mac Rebennack perspective (Dr. John's real name), as opposed to his stage personae, and Auerbach succeeded in bringing out the Dr. you've always wanted. Ultimately, what I like best about Locked Down is that it just sounds cool! It's greazy and funky and features plenty of Dr. John's signature N'awlins hoodoo voodoo thing which he's been doing since the '60s. He's part shaman and part Mardi Gras Indian, who has honed his craft on the wrong side of the tracks.
