Magma (reissued under the name Kobaïa) is the debut album by progressive rock or "zeuhl" group Magma, which was released as a double-LP in 1970. The album tells the story of a group of people fleeing a doomed Earth to settle on the fictional planet Kobaïa. Kobaïa" (Christian Vander) – 10:15. Aïna" (Vander) – 6:15. Malaria" (Vander) – 4:20. Sohïa" (Teddy Lasry) – 7:00. Sckxyss" (François Cahen) – 3:47. Auraë" (Vander) – 10:55. Thaud Zaïa" (Claude Engel) – 7:00.

Leader Christian Vander relinquished some control over the group for this album, only writing about half the music. From the start, the signature Magma sound is noticeably different, to which the quaint rhythm box-generated Latin beat flavoring the title track attests. Bassist Bernard Paganotti wrote "Weidorje

In August 1972, Magma released the album The Unnamables, under the alias Univeria Zekt. However, the album sold only 1,500 copies. Many musicians left the band that year, including François Cahen, Louis Toesca, Jeff Seffer, Francis Moze, and Teddy Lasry  . In 1976, Top briefly rejoined the band for the recording of the album Üdü Ẁüdü, but left soon after due to strained relations with frontman Christian Vander. More lineup turnover followed in 1977, with Jean DeAntoni replacing Gabriel Federow on guitar, Guy Delacroix replacing Bernard Paganotti on bass, and Clement Bailly hired as a second drummer. In 1978, Magma released the album Attahk.

Track 7 is a previously unreleased bonus track.

The front cover of this first CD version by Seventh was reproduced from the original LP on Utopia label; the Utopia catalogue number BUL 1-1730 is still visible on this CD cover.

Some inconsistencies in credits :
• Page 2 of booklet shows a list of musicians, with their Kobaïan names. Benoît Widemann and Michel Graillier appear as keyboardists.
• Page 3 of booklet shows track-by-track musicians' credits, more detailed (more players mentioned than on previous page), but with Widemann and Graillier not credited on any track.

Explanation: the musicians list on page 2 is the "official" Magma line-up of 1976 whereas the credits on page 3 are the actual credits for the present recordings. It is however acknowledged that Michel Graillier is featured on track 1, despite not being credited there (see for instance the original LP issue).
