A definitive protest album and a departure from the psychedelic soul that fueled the band’s rise, There’s A Riot Goin’ On is as much about the struggles Black Americans still faced after the Civil Rights Movement as it is about Sly’s own demons. But this album is just superb! First, the production is wonderful, including all the live instruments, all the songs are gorgeous, it's got a nostalgic feel and Gwen may never have sounded better. The unique expression in her voice is right on point, and she sounds like a really awesome, talented friend singing with you. That's a really good thing-artists need that. It is certainy good enough to include in a Christmas playlist of songs you enjoy and will fit in quite well. I would not call it the greatest Christmas album ever, but definitely not the worst either. 3 people found this helpful.
