Indie Rock Superchunk. Band Name Superchunk.

Foolish is a heavy album, musically and emotionally. But it's also never a drag. That controlled sense of pacing extends not just across the songs but the whole album. There's still plenty of that old joyful bashing, the caustic moments balanced by speed and sweetness. This is probably the darkest album Superchunk ever made, but however serious Foolish gets, there's always more of the giddy thrill of hearing a group friends who sound like they're having a blast playing together, even if they're also pushing themselves to go further, giving the songs that much more all-or-nothing intensity than everyone else around them.

As "Foolish" stands, it's an album of heavy punk hooks and head-nodding anthems, with a target of shrill cries and melody laden guitar riffs. There is also deep exposure to experimentation with positive noise ("Like a Fool" and "Keeping Track") that keeps the album just zippy enough to stay away from the "it's the same old same old" statement. So with a mix of Superchunk punk staples and varying positive drift, "Foolish" should be on anyone's musical shelf. The album starts with one of the more majestic tracks of the series with.

This album has an average beat per minute of 136 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 82/186 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page. Album starts at 82BPM, ends at 174BPM (+92), with tempos within the -BPM range. Try refreshing the page if dots are missing). Recent albums by Superchunk.

Forged at a difficult time in the band's history, this album is a dark masterpiece that contrasts the band's signature high-energy power punk attack of On the Mouth with a far more somber, orchestrated approach, while still retaining the band's melancholy melodic majesty. From the opening track, "Like a Fool," with it's droning guitar and languid pace, Superchunk serves notice of their desire to move in new directions.

Album · 1994 · 12 Songs. Recorded in the wake of band principals Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance ending their romantic relationship, Foolish finds Superchunk both stretching out and looking inward. Certainly, opening the record with the slowly unfurling, self-effacing ballad Like a Fool announces a dramatic break from their signature, pop-punk salvos, while the band mine new emotional depths through the patiently paced, scabrous jangle of Driveway to Driveway and Keeping Track. But Water Wings proves they can still deliver adrenalized anthems when the mosh pit beckons.
