Mass 187 were the most famous gangsta rap group to emerge from Kansas City, Missouri and, along with and (Tung) Twista, the only noteable Midwest rap artists to have a major commercial breakthough in the '90s. They released Real Trues Paying Dues in 1996 to a moderately positive response, the sole single from the album being the popular "Gangsta Strut", released on 12" both as a retail pressing and as a club promotional pressing on Pay Day records.
Despite their best efforts, the trio of Mass 187 turns in a standard gangsta rap record with their debut Real Trues Paying Dues. You could assume that would be the case, but you would be wrong. Mass 187 is by-the-book gangsta - after all, their first single is "Gangsta Strut," which is hardly an indictment of the pimp lifestyle, is it? Sure, the Houston-based trio can rhyme with dexterity and they know.
