Mozart: Flute Concertos Nos. 1 and 2; Concerto for Flute & Harp. Mozart's youthful Flute Concertos, K. 313 and K. 314, and the Concerto for flute, harp, and orchestra, K. 299, may not be obvious choices for a sonic spectacular, but flutist and conductor Patrick Gallois finds enough bright and colorful sonorities in these works to make this SACD an audiophile's delight. There is no indication that Gallois or the Swedish Chamber Orchestra use period instruments, yet this almost does not matter in their tasteful performances, which seem in all other respects to observe Classical practices, right down to including a harpsichord continuo.

Yet it doesn't quite work out that way in this release by French flutist Patrick Gallois and Bulgarian pianist Maria Prinz. The music makes a perfectly pleasant impression; Gallois comes from a long line of French players whose tone alone is probably worth the purchase price, and he's got a lovely way with Mozart's melodies. The problem is that he doesn't get to play too many of them. The dominant instrument in these sonatas (except for the Sonata in B flat major, K. 570, of which more in a moment) is the piano.
