Steve Lamacq wants to counter the prevailing narrative about ‘90s indie. It wasn’t all about laddish terrace anthems and Blur versus Oasis, explains the veteran BBC 6 Music DJ. There were all these other bands that are either forgotten or you have never heard of that were doing really interesting things on the periphery. I remember the Cable album and ‘Freeze The Atlantic’; but I don’t remember a lot else about them because they were intentionally slightly anonymous and let the music do everything for them – possibly as a response to the larger than life characters that had come earlier in the decade. The ones holding the Scottish scene together The Delgados, ‘Pull The Wires From The Wall’. Steve Lamacq: Lost Alternatives is released March 22 through Demon Music Group. His autobiography, ‘Going Deaf For A Living’ is published by Omnibus Press on April 18. The Big Read – Madonna: People pick on me.

Steve Lamacq - Lost Alternatives. I personally, and Banquet is too, am all about new music. But this year one of the records I’m most looking forward to is the Steve Lamacq compilation Lost Alternatives. I can’t think there’s many tracks on this compilation I don’t have as a 7 somewhere, from a time when I was just discovering the indie-disco, and a subculture that I fell in love with and became my life. Another great year and my favourite release is Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers - Music Of Many Colours. For me this is Fela's best ever album and it has been really hard to get for a long time. Closely followed by Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica and the Delines – Colfax. See Rough Trade West's brilliant Record Store Day lineup including KT Tunstall and Celeste here.
