Blood Red Shoes are an alternative rock duo from Brighton, England consisting of Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell. They have released five full-length albums, Box of Secrets (2008), Fire Like This (2010), In Time to Voices (2012), Blood Red Shoes (2014) and Get Tragic (2019) as well as several EPs and a number of singles. In 2014, they founded their own label, Jazz Life.

Blood Red Shoes is the fourth album by Brighton-based rock band Blood Red Shoes, released on 3 March 2014 in the UK and Europe through Jazz Life Records. The album was recorded over a 6-month period in Berlin and was entirely self-produced and engineered by the band themselves. The first song from the album, "The Perfect Mess", was released on 1 December 2013, after 10 QR codes were found in different cities by the band's fans.

Blood Red Shoes have been hiding in plain sight. Since 2005, the Brighton-based duo of drummer Steve Ansell and guitarist Laura-Mary Carter have released a handful of singles and one album, 2008's Box of Secrets, on major label V2. They've toured extensively at home, throughout the EU, and been billed at festivals from ATP to Pukkelpop. They mostly forgot about the United States, though. In its best moments, Fire Like This strikes a balance between heartfelt and heavy.

Recorded on analogue equipment with a minimum of overdubs, Blood Red Shoes' second long-player takes a step back away from the sometimes anodyne indie rock sound of their 2008 debut. The result is harder and starker, closer in feel to the output of perennial alt-rock outsider Steve Albini, who BRS' Steven Ansell has cited as an inspiration. However, that's not to say Fire Like This doesn't tick the indie rock boxes. Simply put together it may be, but this is still a punchy and commercial effort.

In the years they've spent simmering away under the mainstream, Blood Red Shoes have remained true to the label-wary, independent approach to music making. In the years they've spent simmering away under the mainstream, Blood Red Shoes have remained true to the label-wary, independent approach to music making. They probably haven't made much money, but they have become a consistent, reliable and underrated.

A more mature "Box of Secrets", "Fire Like This" is the best sophomore LP Blood Red Shoes could have written. It's as glum as the first one, and contains just as many alt rock bangers and lovely ideas; from the groovy break-up anthem "It Is Happening Again" and the slow depressive "When We Wake" to the catchy "Light It Up" and the dreamy oh-ohs of "One More Empty Chair".
