Gene Austin (June 24, 1900 – January 24, 1972) was an American singer and songwriter, one of the first "crooners". His recording of "My Blue Heaven" sold over five million copies and was the largest selling record of all time. His 1920s compositions "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street" and "The Lonesome Road" became pop and jazz standards. Austin was born as Lemeul Eugene Lucas in Gainesville, Texas (north of Dallas), to Nova Lucas (died 1943) and the former Serena Belle Harrell (died 1956).

Gene Austin had a very pleasant sounding voice and he could put feeling into so many: Garden In The Rain, Forgive Me, Just a Little Street Where Old Friends Meet, Tonight You Belong To Me, Girl of My Dreams, Romona, My Blue Heaven, just to mention a few. AND how could anyone not like/love listening to his rendition of "When You're Alone" from 1931. Never heard it played or sung better. Many of the orchestras after 1938 or so sounded too brassy to me, though there were many great singers in later years.
