On this album, Dave Cousins re-records a number of his songs from the Strawbs as well as recording some new tunes he wrote more recently, with just himself and Melvin Duffy in the room (Melvin playing pedal-steel slide). I am so glad he did, as not only are these versions excellent, but the slide guitar playing is beautiful and adds a layer to the music here that is not on any other Dave Cousins or Strawbs album. Perhaps most enjoyable are some tunes that had only been recorded using 80s (over-)production values on previous albums.

This is a heartwarming set from Strawbs main man Dave Cousins’ only solo tour of the USA, recorded at The Kent Stage, Kent, Ohio on March 15th 2008. There were other dates, but apparently this is the only one that was professionally recorded. The first official Dave Cousins solo album Two Weeks Last Summer from 1972 is well represented with a full ten-minute version of Blue Angel, plus Ways and Means and We’ll Meet Again Sometime, which is the set closer. Of course all these songs have all been done numerous times in the years since they were first released, either by Cousins alone, Electric Strawbs and Acoustic Strawbs, on various live and studio albums, but one will never hear these songs quite like this. Heartily recommended.

Dave Cousins (born David Joseph Cousins, 7 January 1945, Hounslow, Middlesex, England) has been the leader, singer and most active songwriter of Strawbs since 1967. He has performed frequently as a much-in-demand acoustic duo with Strawbs guitarist Brian Willoughby. His first solo album, Two Weeks Last Summer, was released in 1972. His next two albums "Old School Songs" (1980) and The Bridge (1994) were by Dave Cousins & Brian Willoughby. Cousins remains active, regularly touring with Acoustic Strawbs.

Founder members Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper started out playing bluegrass and then evolved their songs through folk and pop before embracing quality electric rock music. In 1980, Cousins made a guest appearance on a heavy metal album for British soon-to-be supergroup Def Leppard. Cousins does not lend any vocal harmonies, but simply reads a melancholy tale that serves as the track's intro. His voice lends itself well to the mood of the verse  .
