Elsewhere, his sense of humour is shrouded in so much darkness that it appears to strike from nowhere. The album’s opening lyrics: Grandpa threw a bag of coon hunt puppies in the burning can, I might have let them starve, Luckily choices like that are luckily left to another kind of man. Swinson’s lyrics may be Ohtis’ greatest strength, his inky poetry spooling out across the album, spiralling out in unexpected directions

While Curve of Earth comes advertised as the official debut album of indie country-rock trio Ohtis, it follows a handful of . releases from the band during the 2000s while they were still based in their hometown of Normal, Illinois. Mostly inactive from 2009 to 2016 except for working on songs by trading ideas and fragments online, Ohtis members had dispersed to other states before deciding to regroup to try out new material on the road. In the meantime, lead singer Sam Swinson spent some time in rehab, battling an addiction that's one of the hardships featured prominently here.

The Curve of the Earth is the self-recorded album by Canadian band Attack in Black, released on November 13, 2007. The album was released on the indie label Dine Alone Records alongside their EP Northern Towns.

Curve of Earth, Ohtis' debut album, was a long time coming. Singer-songwriter Sam Swinson and Adam Pressley first formed the band in high school and recruited a third member, Nate Hahn, to fill out their sound. The group got to the point where they were a well-known local act in their hometown of Normal, Illinois, and the surrounding area, and even did some touring around the . But Swinson got addicted to heroin, the band fell apart, and he embarked on a long, difficult journey to sobriety

In a brief timespan, Ohtis have compiled a debut album proper that not only delves into the darkest corners of existence by addressing themes of drug addiction and dejection, but also serves as a platform for understanding what it means to overcome one’s demons. While Curve of Earth’s eight songs revolve largely, if not solely, around vocalist Sam Swinson and his personal struggles, he makes a valiant effort to address his crippling guilt, the strength it takes to overcome and correct, and even his ability to process and maintain a healthy idea of what religion is and can offer those who seek.

Ohtis is made up of Sam Swinson, Adam Pressley and Nate Hahn. The band formed several years ago but Curve of Earth is their first official worldwide release. The album’s themes focus on singer/songwriter Sam Swinson’s overcoming of addiction, of which he speaks incredibly candidly throughout the album’s 30 minutes.
