L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 – September 1, 2005) was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He played music for much of his life but received little recognition before the early 1990s. In the latter half of that decade, Burnside recorded and toured with Jon Spencer, garnering crossover appeal and introducing his music to a new fan base in the punk and garage rock scenes.

Burnside’s first recordings belied his juke joint roots. George Mitchell recorded him on solo acoustic guitar in 1967 for the folk/blues label Arhoolie. Mississippi Delta Blues, Volume II featured Burnside on one side and Joe Callicott on the other (these have recently been re-released by Fat Possum). The album garnered Burnside recognition with the folk/blues crowd, and he was booked in the . Canada, and Europe as a solo hill-country blues artist. The ’70s killed the careers of many blues men, including Burnside.
Burnside owes his breakthrough to the 1992 documentary Deep Blues, which led to his signing to Fat Possum Records when he was already in his sixties. Since then, he has been taken up by such hip figures as Jon Spencer and Beck producer Tom Rothrock, resulting in albums that have broadened his popularity but irritated purists with their contemporary gimmicks.

L. Burnside (born Robert Lee Burnside, November 23 1926 - September 1 2005) was a blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist who lived in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He played music for most of his life, but did not get popular till the 1990s. Burnside was born in Harmontown, Mississippi, in Lafayette County.
Burnside's 1996 album A Ass Pocket of Whiskey (recorded with Jon Spencer) gained massive critical acclaim, earning praise from music legends Bono and Iggy Pop. After the death of Kimbrough and the burning of Kimbrough's juke joint in Chulahoma, Mississippi, Burnside quit recording studio material for Fat Possum, though he did continue to tour. After a heart attack in 2001, Burnside's doctor advised him to stop drinking; Burnside did, but he reported that change left him unable to play.
