Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock & Stanley Turrentine. Always Something There is an album by jazz saxophonist Stanley Turrentine recorded for the Blue Note label in 1968 and performed by Turrentine with orchestra and strings arranged by Thad Jones. Blue Flames is a collaboration album by organist Shirley Scott and saxophonist Stanley Turrentine recorded in 1964 and released on the Prestige label.

The first side features his working quartet at that time, and on the second side they are augmented by Hubbard and Stanley Turrentine. This album, taken from two different concerts in 1973, is basically two songs. Side one of the LP contains two different recordings of Hornets, a Miles Davis-like piece, where the band riffs in a fairly simple, maybe even too simplistic jazz-funk riff, whild Herbie Hancock does some wild soloing on an electric piano. The piece is good, but with only one riff throughout, it does tend to get tedious if you try to listen to anything other than Hancock. The second side, containing only Gibraltar, is more of a band piece, and more entertaining.

This LP pairs trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and tenor-saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, two very individual players who always brought out the best in each other. The backup rhythm section (guitarist Eric Gale, keyboardist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Jack DeJohnette) is a major asset and inspires the two horns to play reasonably creative solos.

Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnnette, and Eric Gale are great on this recording, but my radio listeners will not experience the sound quality a compact disc can provide for this great concert performed by these phenomenal musicians.
