Dots and Loops is the fifth studio album by English-French rock band Stereolab. It was released on 22 September 1997 in the United Kingdom by Duophonic Records and in the United States by Elektra Records. Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars contributed to several tracks, and the album was co-produced by Andi Toma with the band. By August 1999, the album had sold over 75,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan

In September 1997, Stereolab’s sixth album Dots and Loops was their first to land on the Billboard charts. It may have been riding the critical goodwill of the previous year’s breakthrough Emperor Tomato Ketchup, but the time was ripe for Stereolab’s breakthrough, as well-over the past year, the modern rock landscape had finally caught up to the crate-digging leftists. For its follow-up, Dots and Loops, the group scaled back its rhythmic experiments and concentrated on layered compositions. Heavily influenced by bossa nova and swinging '60s pop, Dots and Loops is a deceptively light, breezy album that floats by with effortless grace. Even the segmented, 20-minute "Refractions in the Plastic Pulse" has a sunny, appealing surface - it's only upon later listens that the interlocking melodies and rhythms reveal their intricate interplay

I'm now in complete agreement. I listen to and enjoy many genres of music, and Stereolab really hit the spot for me. It's not frantic or cold or manipulative, but most importantly, it's not boring. Very pleasing music, from start to finish. Stereolab is an awesome band. Check out their earliest stuff, Cobra Phases and Emperor Tomato Ketchup as well. Stereolab rules m/ . m/.
