The Double Concerto in A minor, Op. 102, by Johannes Brahms is a concerto for violin, cello and orchestra. The orchestra consists of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings. The Double Concerto was Brahms' final work for orchestra. Francescatti and Fournier is at once virtuosic and expressive. Walter's Brahms conducting has always been well-conceived and expressive, and I find in this performance greater contrasts of tempo and expression than is heard in the earlier Stern/Rose/Walter recording. It would have been more coherent of Sony to pair this recording of the triple with Walter's first studio recording of Brahms' Double Concerto, made in 1954 with the same orchestra (New York Philharmonic) and sharing one of the soloists: cellist Leonard Rose, now joined by Isaac Stern in what turned out to be the latter's only recording with Walter.
