A Tricky album only begins to make sense when all the nice people have gone home. Put on your heathen cap and picture the witching hour of godless, subterranean London: The shadows morph into disfigured David Lynch characters, alleys become shady pharmaceutical venues, and somewhere out of sight Tricky’s Vulnerable is dizzying itself on a turntable. Suffice it to say, this isn’t dinner music – unless you’re Nosferatu.

No one exemplifies the rise and fall of 1990s dance auteur quite as dramatically as former Massive Attack rapper Adrian "Tricky" Thaws. His superb 1995 solo debut, Maxinquaye, entered the charts at number two. No artist in recent memory has been so feted by the rock aristocracy.

Vulnerable does begin by hitting a few promising notes. Stay" has a galloping rhythm, dub undertones, and playful melody, and its boy/girl lyric makes effective use of the dual vocals. Unfortunately, Tricky's rasp is featured on every track, sometimes to superfluous effect. By the end of the album, Tricky returns to acting on his worst impulses, stumbling through hackneyed sonics and wincing lyrics.
