The Brill Building (built 1931 as the Alan E. Lefcourt Building and designed by Victor Bark J. is an office building located at 1619 Broadway on 49th Street in the New York City borough of Manhattan, just north of Times Square and further uptown from the historic musical Tin Pan Alley neighborhood. It is famous for housing music industry offices and studios where some of the most popular American songs were written.

While the Brill Building Sound is a rather broad term, it most narrowly refers to ly the youthful teams of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil-who wrote for the Aldon Music publishing company. It was actually located nearby rather than inside Manhattan’s Brill Building, itself a long-established home to publishers.

Brill Building (also known as Brill Building Sound or Brill Building pop) may be the only subgenre of pop music named after a building, for it was in that very building, a former monolith of New York City's Garment District located at 1619 Broadway, where producer Don Kirshner placed the best and brightest songwriters of the Camelot years.

On The Brill Building Project, Elling picks from a cross-section of these songwriters, running the gamut from such obvious standards as the Sammy Cahn/James Van Heusen-Frank Sinatra vehicle "Come Fly with Me," to more idiosyncratic pop/rock choices like Elling's conceptually arty doo wop-meets-beatnik comedy sketch take on the Coasters' Shoppin’ for Clothes. Generally speaking, most of the songs here are reworked by Elling and his band into various contemporary jazz styles that allow Elling plenty of room for his expansive, vocalese-influenced singing style.
